A multi disciplinary artist who explores themes of liberation, love and sexuality
through his art and fashion. Ayushman Mitra aka Bobo born in 1989 to a cosmopolitan Bengali family, was
always surrounded by rich culture and art. Educated at Mayo College, Ajmer; Bobo
excelled in theatre, debate and art. He went on to study at St. Xavier's College,
Calcutta. He worked as an actor,
production and costume designer in several independent
projects during this period. It was around that time Bobo held his first
painting exhibition. Calcutta was not just his home but also his creative playground, the city became a part of his identity. In 2013, he went on to study Fashion
Management at the Conde Nast College of Fashion and Design in London. It was here that the idea of ‘Bobo Calcutta’, his fashion/art house was born. His labour of love is an amalgamation of many things - his love for mythology and culture along with his exploration of queer identities, heartbreaks, love stories and animals. These put together form the palette and
base of his work.
He made his debut at the
Lakme Fashion Week in 2019 and his work has been extensively featured in
magazines such as Vogue, GQ , Elle , India Today etc.The French media house , Brut launched a
cover story on his art and identity. He has
collaborated with companies such as PepsiCo, Levi’s, Absolut, Adidas etc as well.
Celebrities such as Deepika Padukone, Madhuri Dixit, Vicky Kaushal, Mahesh Babu,
Jim Sarbh, Ananya Pandey, Kunal Khemu, Kiara Advani, Anant Vijay, Shilpa Rao to
name a few, have worn his creations.
He was awarded at Vogue India's Forces of
Fashion in 2023.
Bobo identifies as queer and sees his work as a kind of activism. His brand believes
in sustainability - every single piece is custom made by hand using natural fabrics
and is one of a kind. He treats his garments like art rather than something that is
trending, thus becoming collectables.
